# Why does PMI cross highlighting not work in 3DPDF?

**Question** : I have created the [PMI crosshighlight](https://docs.techsoft3d.com/publish/latest/guide/authoring/defining_3d.html#activating-pmi-cross-highlighting) with `m_bActivatePMICrossHighlight =true`, but it still doesn’t work as expected in 3DPDF.

**Answer** :

1. Please make sure the “Preferred Renderer” is set to “DirectX”

2. Please make sure “Protected Mode at startup” is disabled.

- When protected mode is enabled, it disables JavaScript. Therefore, it is an expected result that the associated face is not highlighted.
- Attached [link](https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AppSec/protectedmode.html) for explanation: _All PDF processing such as PDF and image parsing, JavaScript execution, and 3D rendering happens in the sandbox and are subject to its limits; for example, processes cannot access other processes._
